A fire destroyed a house on Highway 16 near Lake Kathlyn Road, just west of Smithers, on June 18.

There were no injuries.

It took 22 members and three apparatuses from Smithers Fire Rescue and five members and one apparatus from Telkwa to fight the blaze.

Three RCMP units for traffic control and detours, one BC Ambulance unit for firefighting rehab/health monitoring and one unit from Emergency Support Services to provide assistance to the homeowners also attended the scene.

Crews were on scene from 3:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.

The nearest hydrant that was suitable for the two tender trucks to re-fill with water was in the parking lot of the Bulkley Valley Pool and Recreation Centre.

Fire Chief Derek Dickson said they are still gathering statements from the residents and witnesses to determine the cause.

“While this is another unfortunate event in the community, all of the responders should be congratulated on their professionalism, diligence and prompt actions. Without these dedicated volunteer firefighters and other agency professionals, the outcomes could be much different,” he said.

“It should also be noted, that Smithers Fire Rescue is in need of additional volunteers to maintain its ability to serve the residents of the community. If you are interested in becoming a member please email us at fire@smithers.ca.”
