A wildland fire just off of Viewmount Road in Smithers briefly closed the road on Thursday afternoon May 9.

The road was closed just as buses and parents were coming to pick up students from Ebenezer Canadian Reformed School.

Fire chief Derek Dickson said crews were called out at 2:15 p.m. and had the fire under control and substantially extinguished at approx. 3 p.m.

This resulted in only a slight delay for school buses and parents to get through to pick up their children.

There were 17 firefighters, with the Telkwa fire department also assisting.

In total, the blaze was estimated to be around 75 hectares in size.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
